“When you keep it simple - especially when it comes to technology - you set yourself free.”
~ Kat Milner
Introduction:
Technology has become a cornerstone of modern life, shaping the way we communicate, work, and entertain ourselves. Yet, for many, technology also brings a sense of overwhelm - especially in business.
Notifications ping constantly, updates roll in faster than we can adapt, and the sheer number of devices and platforms feels impossible to navigate. If you’ve ever thought, “Why is tech so complicated?”, you’re not alone. Let's explore why technology can feel overwhelming and see how easy it can be to simplify it.
Over the past few decades, technology has evolved at breakneck speed. While this innovation drives progress, it also creates challenges for everyday users:
Frequent Updates: Whether it’s your smartphone’s operating system or a favourite app, constant updates can be disorienting. New features often change the interface and complicate familiar workflows.
Integration Problems: Many devices promise seamless connections, but the reality is often troubleshooting and frustration.
Overloaded Interfaces: Companies pack software with features, leaving users often struggling to locate simple functions.
The result? A steep learning curve for even the most basic tasks.
In today’s digital era, we’re inundated with information:
Endless Notifications: Alerts for emails, texts, social media, and apps can leave us mentally drained.
Too Many Choices: From streaming platforms to online stores, decision fatigue becomes a daily battle.
Managing this flood of information is a challenge that even the most tech-savvy Coaches struggle to overcome.
The fast-paced nature of technology often triggers FOMO. Not to mention, having various platforms suggested by people we admire - friends, mentors, and other Coaches.
It may not so much be the latest gadget that makes us feel FOMO. How often do we see someone who appears successful, saying they use a particular platform or program, and credit it as the secret to their marketing success.
When you want a similar level of success, it makes sense to think you need to use the same program/platform they did - but don't stop to ask if it's the right fit for your business.
Ultimately, this often results in wasted time, energy spent learning the new technology, and wasted money because it wasn't the right fit. I've seen so many coaches lose thousands of dollars and over a year of not working with clients because of this kind of FOMO.
One of the biggest frustrations is the inconsistency in how platforms function and interact with other platforms. For example:
Incompatibility: Transferring files or syncing data can feel like navigating a maze.
Bottom line - if programs are not designed to work together, trying to force this connection is one of the primary frustrations for most Coaches.
This lack of standardization and integration between different platforms often makes technology more intimidating for new and non tech-savvy users.
Simplifying the technology in your life (and business) is not just a luxury—it’s essential for mental clarity. A minimalist approach helps:
Reduce Stress: Fewer platforms/programs mean fewer logins, and a smaller learning curve.
Save Money: Avoiding having multiple platforms reduces costs.
Boost Productivity: A decluttered digital environment allows you to focus on what truly matters.
Conduct a Digital Review
Review everything you are signed up for, especially what you are paying for. Are you actually using it?
Choose Simpler Tools
When reviewing your technology, ask yourself if you could do part (or all) of what you are doing more simply or in an easier - and less expensive - way.
Set Boundaries
Turn off device notifications during focus hours. Consider adopting tech-free evenings to recharge yourself. Set clear hours for when you will reply to clients, so you don't feel the need to respond immediately if you happen to see an email or message.
Organize Digital Assets
Take time to clean up your desktop, delete duplicates, and create folders for files. Regular maintenance helps avoid clutter buildup.
Technology should serve you and your business, not dominate your life. A few habits can help:
Simplified and streamlined tech: Utilising an integrated, all-in-one platform instead of multiple platforms will remove a significant amount of stress and frustration. Using technology that is designed to work together, makes everything so much easier.
Mindful Use: Focus on tasks rather than multitasking with multiple tabs. Pick one thing, get that done, then move on to the next thing - you'll find you are SO much more productive!
By embracing simplicity, and using tools that streamline your processes, you will create more space to breathe and focus on the work you love. Remember, it’s okay to step back and choose what works for you. Technology is here to enhance your life, not complicate it.
