Simplify Your Tech email mistake

#1 Email Mistake That's Costing You Clients

April 06, 20254 min read

“One small tweak to the way you write your emails could make the difference between being ignored and getting booked.”

~ Kat Milner, Chief Tech Ninja

Introduction:

You’re doing everything right—or so you think. You’ve built an email list, you send out newsletters, and you’re trying to engage your audience. But… crickets. No replies, no bookings, and certainly no new clients.

What’s going wrong?

The answer is one critical email mistake that almost every coach makes:

Your Emails Are Too Focused on You, Not Your Reader

This is the silent killer of email marketing success. Many coaches fall into the trap of writing emails that talk about their journey, their offer, or their success—but forget to make it relevant to the reader. If your audience can’t see themselves in your emails, they’ll disengage fast.

Why This Mistake Hurts Your Conversions

People open emails with one question in mind: “What’s in it for me?” If your emails don’t immediately show them how you can help solve their problem, they’ll skim and delete—or worse, unsubscribe.

When your emails focus too much on your business and not their pain points, desires, and struggles, they feel impersonal. The result? No connection, no engagement, and no conversions.

Simplify Your Tech release the overwhelm

How to Fix It and Write Emails That Convert

1. Make Your Reader The Star

Instead of leading with “I,” start with “You.” Shift the focus to their struggles and how you can help.

Example Before: “I just launched my new program to help coaches with their tech struggles. I’m so excited to share it with you!”

Example After: “Are you feeling overwhelmed by tech? You’re not alone! Here’s how you can simplify your systems and focus on what you do best—coaching.”

2. Address a Pain Point Immediately

Hook your readers by speaking to their frustrations or desires. Use a subject line that sparks curiosity or urgency.

Example Subject Lines:

  • Struggling to book clients? This might be why…

  • The email mistake that’s costing you sales (and how to fix it)

  • Are your emails getting ignored? Here’s the fix.

3. Write Like You Are Talking to a Friend

Ditch the corporate tone and write as if you’re having a one-on-one conversation. Keep it personal, engaging, and authentic.

Example: Instead of “Dear valued subscriber,” try “Hey [First Name], I have a quick question for you…”

4. Include a Clear Call-to-Action (CTA)

Want them to book a call? Download a guide? Hit reply? Make it obvious.

Weak CTA: “Hope to hear from you soon!”

Strong CTA: “Click here to book a free 15-minute call so we can tackle this together.”

5. Keep It Simple and Scannable

People skim emails. Use short paragraphs, bullet points, and bold key takeaways to make your message easy to digest.

6. Words and Phrases to Avoid in Your Emails

People skim emails. Use short paragraphs, bullet points, and bold key takeaways to make your message easy to digest.

If you want your emails to actually get read (and not ignored), avoid these common mistakes in your wording:

🚫 Making It About You Instead of Them:

  • I just wanted to…

  • I’m excited to share…

  • I wanted to tell you about…

💡 Instead: Start with their problem or goal. Example:

"I just launched my new program!"
"Struggling with tech? Here’s how to simplify it."

🚫 Generic & Salesy Language:

  • Special offer

  • Limited-time deal

  • Don’t miss out!

💡 Instead: Use clear, personal messaging. Example:

"Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity!"
"Here’s how [coach’s name] got more clients in 30 days."

🚫 Weak or Hesitant Language:

  • Just checking in…

  • Hopefully…

  • Maybe you’d like to…

💡 Instead: Be confident and direct. Example:

"Just checking in to see if you’re interested?"
"Would love to hear your thoughts—does this sound helpful?"

The words you choose can make or break your email’s impact. Make it clear, personal, and focused on your reader’s needs—and you’ll start seeing more engagement, replies, and clients saying ‘YES!’

The Bottom LIne: Make It About THEM

The fastest way to turn emails into clients is to shift from talking about your business to talking about their needs.

Once you make this small but powerful change, you'll see a noticeable boost in engagement, replies, and yes - new client!

By implementing these simple shifts, you’ll start writing emails that get opened, read, and acted on.

Try it out, and watch your email engagement (and client bookings) grow!
